Itinerary

DAY 1 – DEPARTURE – Thursday, May 16

Depart Home for San Jose, Costa Rica

Arrive in San Jose

Transfer to the Hotel and Refresh

On Ground Briefing

Orientation Walking Tour – The group will become oriented with their neighborhood, the public transportation systems, nearby pharmacies, markets, ATMs, etc. Additionally, an in-depth safety briefing will be provided for what to do incase of an emergency.

Spanish Session – To set us up for the program, this will be one of the Spanish lessons designed to offer ‘survival Spanish.’ Learn the basics and a few of the Costa Rica-specific words you can expect to need during the remainder of the trip.

Downtown San Jose Walking Tour – Most of your time in Costa Rica will be spent outside of urban areas. The capital city of San Jose is the economic, cultural and political heart of the country.  We will do a tour with the social business that was developed to revitalize the run-down center of San Jose, drawing both national and international tourists to an area previously known for crime to change the image of the capital city.

DAY 3 – SAN JOSE/MONTEVERDE – Saturday, May 18

El Toledo Coffee Farm Tour – El Toledo Coffee Tour is a family farm since 1940’s. They began the organic coffee and permaculture design to work and live in harmony with nature from the 90’s. They will show you the plantation, the roaster, the brewing, and the process of the drink you enjoy every day.

Free Day to explore Nicoya – The Nicoya Peninsula is one of the 5 “Blue Zones” in the world. Explore the area’s secluded beaches, rugged mountains, diverse wildlife, or local faire.

 

DAY 9 – JACO’ – Friday, May 24

Suicide Prevention and Mental Health in the Happiest Country in Latin America – Hear from an advocate  in the field of suicide prevention and mental health

Elder Care Center – During this visit, we will hear from the director of the organization, and interact with clients. 

Transfer to Jacó

DAY 10 – JACO’ – Saturday, May 25

Breakfast, Day Briefing & Wellness Routine

Adaptive Surfing in Jaco – Adaptive surfing is a branch of the sport that offers different modalities for surf that accommodate physical limitations.

This can include surfing for the blind, or those who have lost a limb. We will talk to someone from the Adaptive Surfing Association of Costa Rica to learn how they have worked to bring this holistic, healing sport to a population that often misses out. As a bonus, we’ll get to try out a surf lesson ourselves!

DAY 11 – SAN JOSE – Sunday, May 26

Lloverá Comida – This NGO works to improve the lives of the homeless by connecting them to resources and addressing addiction and other critical needs. We will hear from the director and participate in a brief service learning component.

Closing Ceremony and Dinner

 

DAY 12 – RETURN – Monday, May 27
