Dominican Republic: Service Learning
Length
9 days
Price
$1,590
Dates
May 29th – June 6th, 2021
The program will take place in the community of La Piedra. The majority of La Piedra current residents began to arrive after the strong winds and flooding caused by Hurricane George (1998) and Hurricane Olga (2007) washed away their homes and all their meager belongings. The families built makeshift homes, made mostly of cardboard and discarded pieces of tin, and without plumbing, along the flood plains of the Ozama River in the capital city of Santo Domingo.
During this 9 day program travelers will have a hands-on Service Learning experience working with the local community to contribute to the construction of some of the following infrastructures: a community park with free Wi-Fi internet, barbershop, basketball court, playground and outside gym, in the community of la Piedra, where more than 200 families and their kids play. Travelers will contribute to the maintenance of five mini aqueducts in five different communities in la Piedra, where more than 300 community members get their water. Over 100 houses have been built and repaired in the last 10 years thanks to My Roof project.
