Destinations

Guanacaste, Arenal, & San Jose

This in-depth 8 day program takes an intimate look at sustainable practices in renewable energy in one of the most environmentally responsible countries in the world.

Costa Rica derives at least 98% of its energy from sustainable sources. The country is abundant in natural energy sources, and this prime environment makes available the resources needed to power an entire nation from 100% sustainable sources.

Costa Rica is pioneering the future of sustainability, and students will learn about the nation’s unique methods to solve the challenging natural and ecological problems humanity faces today by touring plants, companies, and more that are leading the way in innovation in these sectors. At night, they will be able to engage in group discussions to better understand what was learned and how the knowledge can be used back home.

At Forest Experimental Station Horizon in Guanacaste, students will be able to see how the Station is working to restore land from its past agricultural state to a dry tropical forest habitat. The Station aims to repopulate the area with native species, promoting the ecological importance of reforestation and conservation on the environment.

The Presa Sangregadro Dam on Lake Arenal is operated by the Costa Rican Institute of Electricity, which was formed to solve the problems of power shortages that occurred in Costa Rica in the 1940s. Students will learn how the dam provides valuable hydroelectric power to citizens, which offers low-cost and sustainable energy solutions for the region.

Additionally, students will take extensive tours of companies and plants in other areas of energy production, such as geothermal, biomass, solar, and wind.

Along with the educational portion of the program, travelers will have the opportunity to explore Costa Rica’s amazing tropical destinations. Included in the program are visits to waterfalls, beaches, and hot springs.

There will be many opportunities to see local flora and fauna in their natural habitats on a naturalist tour at Rincon de la Vieja National Park.

To end the program, students will have an exciting day of canopy ziplining and touring San Jose’s Central Market and Artisanal Market for souvenirs.
